Ah, Clapham. It's pretty much got it all, I think. Nice housing with lots of character; good restaurants, cafes and bars; close to Central London with excellent transport links and having, of course, the beautiful Clapham Common. What else could you ask for?
There are two main centres to Clapham: the high street (called, um, Clapham High Street) and Clapham Junction. Clapham Junction is quite a busy area and a popular night-spot containing the majority of Clapham's restaurants and bars. Clapham High Street, over the other side of the common, is quite a bit more laid back.
Clapham is dominated by the very large and beautiful Clapham Common (park): an area that attracts the city's fitness and sports enthusiasts in alarming numbers. Football, cricket, touch rugby, ultimate frisbee, Aussie rules... There are large numbers of people doing all these and more on any given weekend and by God they're a healthy, good-looking bunch. As you might expect there are large numbers of young professionals here but it's also quite a family friendly area.
Clapham, along with Battersea and much of South-West London used to be really quite a rough area but has seen a massive resurgence in the last ten years or so. It is sometimes called the Islington of the South although personally I think that Islington should aspire to be the Clapham of the North.
Along with Clapham's revival has come, inevitably, massive house price and rent rises. It is not cheap here. For a (slightly) more affordable alternative you might want to consider nearby Balham, Streatham or Tooting.
