In general Fulham is a residential, leafy, green place of the classic two up / two down variety although there are some large new apartment buildings along the (somewhat pleasant) approach to Putney. Fulham can be quite posh and upper class - particularly around Parson's Green and the approach to Chelsea along the King's rd. Having said that it is somewhat affordable (in the sense that anywhere in London is "somewhat" affordable). Young professionals and Aussies like it a lot here, evident from the scenes of debauchery around Fulham Broadway at closing time on any given night of the week.
Fulham Broadway is a street full of chain McPubs that is *heaving* with young professionals on any given night. I think you know you've reached a certain age when you'd rather pull your own fingernails out than spend time in such a place. Luckily Fulham has lots of nice pubs, too.
