Notting Hill W11 Guide and Information
London Guide - West London

Notting Hill was formerly a largely Caribbean neighbourhood with a surprisingly rough past.

These days, being right next to Central London and Hyde Park with high celebrity and banker quotient, a two bed flat in Notting Hill can easily set you back £1,200 / week. It is nice. There are a few rough estates to the North (which have become somewhat trendy in their dreariness due to being taken over young society types) but in general the housing and high streets of Notting Hill have lots of character. Much of the housing is in mewsy sorts of streets which, I'm reliably informed, is where, in the old days, the servants used to live with the horses (and I mean that literally). These days, the tables have been turned as the grand old houses have been knocked into flats and the servants quarters have become quaint and cozy accomodation. The Americans love these sorts of places.

In terms of where to live: near to Maida Vale and Holland Park Avenue = posh and expensive; around the Portobello Road = trendy (still expensive) and then things get dramatically more down to earth and rougher as you approach the A40 and go under it. I quite like Queen's Park but this is much more Willesden than Notting Hill. (Queen's Park is very popular with young socialites whose ambitions lie in Notting Hill (or Knightsbridge) but who can't even remotely afford to live there).

There is a (somewhat overrated) market on the Portobello Road but far more interesting are the plethora of antiques shops and galleries in the area. I even had a regular customer who did a roaring trade in upmarket sex toys in the area, proving that those bankers aren't as repressed as they all seem to be. This being the celebrity pied-a-terre of choice, there are no end of expensive cafes, restaurants and bars in the area.

In celebration of its Caribbean past, Nottng Hill hosts the Notting Hill carnival in the summer. The carnival is a raucous celebration of all things Caribbean, regularly attracting a million people.

Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.
